DCE teams with Windsor Law Centre for Cities to bring cycling expertise to the Southern Ontario region.

Cities around the world are making substantial improvements in cycling infrastructure in a relatively short period of time, investing in their economy, environment, health, happiness, accessibility, safety, and social equity. However, it is of the utmost importance that these changes are thoroughly considered and carefully implemented, to avoid potential mistakes and adverse effects. To address these opportunities and challenges in the City of Windsor—in conjunction with the Windsor Law Centre for Cities—the Dutch Cycling Embassy presented a digital workshop on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022 from 10:00 am to 14:30 pm (EST).

In this virtual session, experts from the City of Windsor and the Netherlands—including representatives from Bike-minded and Arup—shared their knowledge and experience from decades of political processes, transportation planning, and infrastructure design. In addition to looking at two specific case studies within the City of Windsor, this session covered the following four topics:

  • Infrastructure design - Lanes, streets, and intersections using Dutch principles
  • Policies/budgets - Legislative measures for governments to prioritize cycling
  • Pop-up to permanent - Light, fast construction methods, materials, practices
  • Combining bike and public transport - For seamless door-to-door mobility

Windsor Law Centre for Cities Director Anneke Smit kindly introduced the session.
